What is an outside bet?
Before we delve into each outside bet type, let’s first explore what an outside bet actually is. To put it simply, when looking at a Roulette table, any bets that do not include single number boxes, are classed as outside bets and can be found on the outskirts of the table. If you were to place a betting chip on a single number, that would be an inside bet, rather than outside.
Outside Bets
Now we know where to find the outside bets, let’s explore further into what each outside bet is, how to place it and the odds attached to it.
Column
With a 2:1 payout, a Column bet consists of placing a wager within one of three boxes labelled 2:1 or 2 to 1 which can be found below the numbers on the table layout. Each 2:1 box represents a column of 12 numbers above the box, not in numerical order.
Dozen
The only other outside bet to have a 2:1 payout attached to it is a Dozen bet. Just like the Column bet, and as the name would suggest, a Dozen bet consists of 12 numbers. This time, the 12 numbers are in numerical order. To place a wager on either the 1st 12, 2nd 12 or 3rd 12, simply place a betting chip(s) within the corresponding box to the side of the numbers marked 1st 12, 2nd 12 or 3rd 13.
Red / Black
With pocketed compartments on the wheel altering from red to black, this bet type focuses on the colours rather than the numbers at play. So, whether you think the next winning pocket will be red or black, you’ll need to place your chip(s) within the box labelled red or black. On some tables, the box itself will be filled with the colour it is representing. This bet type is classed as an even money bet, where the payout is 1:1.
Odd / Even
Rather than placing a wager on a particular number, this bet type allows you to place a wager on whether the number within the winning pocket is classed as odd or even. You will find the boxes to place this wager next to the red and black boxes on the table layout. This bet is also classed as an even money bet, where the payout is 1:1.
Low / High
If you would rather place a bet on whether the winning number is high or low, with numbers 1 – 18 classed low and 19 – 36 as high. Depending on your prediction, you’ll need to place a wager within the corresponding box. Again, this is an even money bet where the payout is 1:1.
